The idea is that if gay marriage is disallowed to protect the religious sanctity of marriage, following the same logic, divorce should also be disallowed to protect religious sanctity.

It would be highly hypocritical to claim that gay marriage should not be allowed and not say the same for divorce under the same reasoning; it could become clear that the real reasoning behind banning gay marriage in California was only because of people’s bigoted views.

Please note that I myself am straight, and I do not live in California. However, I do believe in equality for all people and I resent any case of religious oppression.
