We’ve all been to YouTube a few times and have accepted video content as part of the internet these days. News sites publish their TV content on the web, and even shows or whole movies can be watched online in some places. Live webcam chats have also been offered by a few major community sites.

But with videos and webcam feeds becoming a normality for the user, smaller sites and business were left out unless they were syndicating YouTube content, an option not leaving a very professional impression to a websites visitor.

High bandwidth cost for streaming video are only part of the reason for the low popularity among webmasters. While it is possible to stream static video from a webserver within certain limits, live video or webcam contents require an application server to do so. Having to stream the video from the beginning up to the desired part for seeking makes webserver streamed video tedious for some tasks and even more expensive in bandwidth cost.

A browser has no video capabilities and requires a plugin to play movies or display cam streams. Currently only Adobes Flash Player has the video capabilities and the installation base to be a feasible client technology for this task. However, the player and the protocols it uses are closed source and for a long time have only been known to Adobe. This enabled Adobe to be the only provider of a server side streaming solution. Unfortunately the price segment of the Flash Media Server is a painful one for smaller businesses and completely unreachable for hobbyist webmasters. This made the video market especially for live webcam streams big boys turf.

The first to break this monopoly was the media server Wowza, which too is a commercial project. While offering some interesting license options for sites to add some smaller video features, building a full fledged video or webcam chat site with Wowza does not come cheap either.

As bandwidth cost declined some sites have started to offer video streamed from a webserver without the seeking abilities of a media server. It wasn’t too pretty, but it worked. Live webcam video in chats and communities however remained a privilege of the big businesses. Especially the community chat market had been dominated by very few companies.

Not even three years ago a new open source project named “red5″ started to be the first to offer a free server for streaming video and remoting, opening the door for enthusiasts and low budget startups in an until then fairly closed market. While the server is still in an alpha stage, it has been used for quite a few live projects already, ending the lack of innovation in this market. It is capable of far more than just playing video files or streaming and recording webcam video. It has full AMF support and shared objects, providing the base to create rich interactive multimedia applications such as chats or even games.

Webcam chat sites and video communities suddenly became very affordable to build and many have popped up in the near past. It is always interesting to follow the explosive development of a niche, when new open source software shifts the borders.

Sound familiar? It seems as if a day doesn’t go by without some new technological tidbit, guaranteed to transform the business world as we know it, is making all the papers. Blogging is hot one day, passe the next. You Tube is the place you want to be — unless you don’t want to be there, of course!

How is a Nichepreneur to make any sense of it all? How do you identify what tools are best to promote your products and services and which are destined to be no more than a flash in the pan phenomenon, long on promise and short on follow-through?

More importantly, how are you going to find the time to figure it all out? When you’re busy running your business, finding the hours needed to learn about a new technology can be challenging enough — spending all of that time and energy only to discover that something is really not for you is a frustration you don’t need!

Save time and minimize frustration by adopting this six step process for approaching new technology. Followed consistently, this process will allow you to identify viable promotion opportunities, discern which ones appear to have sticking power, streamline the learning process, and adopt best practices right from day one!

Step One: Don’t Believe the Hype

Enthusiastic, cheerleading-style articles touting the latest tech tool as the solution to all of your marketing challenges are fun to read — but they seldom provide enough information to make a solid business decision!

Put yourself on a short rein, and don’t let enthusiasm for the flavor-of-the-week be your only guide. Do your research. Discover what demographics are adopting the technology being touted: the audience for Twitter-powered microblogs is different than the crowd downloading podcasts onto their cell phones.

Longevity is definitely a relative term in this environment: internet trends move at the speed of light. However, longevity is key in determining when a fad has staying power: blogging has been around for years now, and has proven business applications, while other, newer tech applications have yet to prove themselves. Consider if you want to be on the cutting edge, taking the risk to try out the new tech and benefit by being an early adopter, or if you’d be more comfortable going with a known and proven platform.

Step Two: Seek Out Reputable Resources to Serve as Guides

While you’re doing your due diligence and researching this new technological tool, you’ll want to pay special attention to where your information is coming from. Not all resources are equally valuable. Look to those individuals who are consistently cited as an Expert by others: it’s a good idea to have a rule of three for this. If three disparate sources all reference the same individual or work, there’s a better than fair chance that that resource has some real value that you can benefit from.

Remember, you don’t have to limit yourself to online research, although that’s often the quickest and easiest way to find information. Check print media: if a tool is well established enough to have books devoted to it, chances are it can be used to help you promote your business effectively.

Step Three: Identify What You Want To Accomplish

No matter what your goal or objective is, there’s a better than fair chance that someone else has already done it first. Look for examples that resonate with you: a blog you’d like to emulate, podcasts that inspire you, You Tube videos that have you green with envy.

Study these examples carefully. What about them ‘works’? Make a list of those things you’d like to adopt for your own message. Obviously, you don’t want to make a carbon copy of someone else’s work, but there’s nothing wrong after modeling yourself after people who have done a great job communicating their message effectively!

Nichepreneurs are often convinced that because they’re in business for themselves, they have to do everything themselves. As a corollary to this, there’s a common misconception that one should know everything possible about running a business from day one and never need any help!

There are a number of platforms to do this online: entire web communities have sprung up for individuals who want to build a better blog, create great You Tube videos, and more. This is often the quickest way to find information and, as an added bonus, start forming relationships with potential colleagues, clients, and peers.

It seems that almost as soon as a new idea gets made reality in the world of automobiles, there is another idea to push that achievement even further than before. We moved from carburetors to fuel injection, added GPS systems, and finally made sure that almost every model comes with automatic transmissions. But, has all that actually been an improvement over the old way of driving? Or has it actually caused more problems than it has fixed? To put it in direct terms, is the increased cost and hassle of new technological gizmos in automobiles worth it?

For instance, in the old days if your car keys were stolen or if you lost them, all you would need to do to get a replacement set made from your spare copy would be to head to your local locksmith, or even to a hardware store that could make copies of keys. But today’s cars are equipped with electronic locks that require electronic keys.

To get these replaced, you have to visit the dealership, or one of the select few licensed digital blacksmiths who can make a replacement key for you. Why is this process so difficult? Because, rather than a physical key that turns a tumbler within a lock, new electronic lock systems are code based, with a secret signal held in the key being transmitted to the engine when the key is inserted into the ignition. Only licensed professionals, such as dealers, are allowed to access the code stored on your key, or to make a new key that will transport this information. All of this has lead to a large increase, according to the American Automobile Association, in lock outs and other problems related to misplaced keys.

Another problem with computers and electronics that are installed in our vehicles is the simple fact that sometimes they have glitches. Think of the computer you are reading this article on, or about any of the past computers you have used. Can you think of an instance where these electronic devices had a serious problem? You’re probably thinking of more than one instance. Now think about your car. How many times has the electronically controlled “service engine soon” light switched on for no reason? And how much did it cost you every visit to the dealer to find out that, in fact, the light was on for no reason?

Now, it would be great if you could simply plug in your car to a computer and that computer could tell you precisely what is wrong with it. But that isn’t usually ever the case of how these things work. And, what’s more, the added cost makes the scant moments when such a technological achievement occur not worth it. What we need to be asking ourselves is, do we need all this technological junk in our cars?
